Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) strongly supported passage of a bipartisan flood insurance reform bill, which reverses the dramatic flood insurance rate hikes for homeowners. Passed by a vote of 306-91, the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act ends the automatic rate increases caused by events such as property sales and restores grandfathered rates for those who played by the rules and built their properties according to code. This bill also provides a refund for those families who have already been hit by unaffordable premium increases.

After multiple freight rail accidents in the Hudson Valley including one this week in Ulster County, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) recommended the mandatory adoption of key safety measures to the Department of Transportation. Last week, the Department of Transportation and the Association of American Railroads (AAR) announced voluntary safety measures including: increasing track inspections; equipping trains with advanced braking systems; using rail traffic routing technology to determine the safest routes; lowering speeds of trains with 20 tanker cars of crude oil; coordinating with localities through which crude oil trains run to address community concerns; installing new trackside safety technology along routes that oil trains travel; and improving emergency response support. Rep. Maloney called for these measures to be mandatory because with no formal rules or regulations, inspectors would be unable to issue fines or take other enforcement measures for failing to live up to the agreement.

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney will hold an emergency telephone town hall on Thursday, February 27 at 7:30PM to discuss the heroin epidemic in the Hudson Valley. Joined by Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Kristin McConnell, Executive Director National Council on Alcoholism & Other Drug Dependencies/Putnam, TEAM Newburgh, and the National Drug Control Policy Office of the White House, Rep. Maloney will call on the Hudson Valley to be declared a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas and call for the increased availability of naloxone, a potentially lifesaving drug designed to reverse opioid prescription drug and heroin overdoses. Maloney will answer questions for constituents as well as discuss community resources and law enforcement resources available. This past year, Rep. Maloney secured $625,000 for five local organizations to combat substance abuse.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney announced today a major agreement today with IBM that will maintain 3,100 high-tech jobs in the Hudson Valley and surrounding areas. The company has committed to increase its minimum job commitment to the state by 750 jobs, and maintain the 3,100 jobs through at least the end of 2016.

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney welcomed the announcement that President Obama’s 2015 budget proposal no longer contained cuts to senior’s benefits, known as chained-CPI. Representative Maloney urged House Leadership to take chained-CPI off the bargaining table. Chained-CPI would cut an average of $650 a year from Hudson Valley seniors’ Social Security.
