Representative Sean Patrick Maloney’s office announced that his office will be furloughing members of his staff as a result of the shutdown. Nationally, more than 800,000 federal employees will be furloughed, including hundreds of employees at U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Stewart Air National Guard Base. Rep. Maloney’s Washington and Newburgh office will remain open and dedicated staff will be available to assist constituents from the Hudson Valley with any problems they may be having with federal government agencies, including the Social Security Administration, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or the Veterans Administration.

With the deadline approaching to apply for U.S. Military Service Academies, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney encouraged students from the Hudson Valley to seek a nomination from his office. Rep. Maloney has the ability to nominate students to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. Students applying to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London do not need a Congressional nomination.

Last week, Republican leaders postponed a vote on the continuing resolution to fund the government after “a revolt by Tea Party conservatives. In addition, numerous Republican leaders have called this resolution the “dumbest idea I’ve ever heard,” “a suicide note,” and “a silly effort.”

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney and Orange County Executive Edward A. Diana announced today a $2.9 million FAA investment at Orange County Airport. The funds will be used to initiate the design phase for construction of a new runway at the general aviation airport. This grant will allow Orange County to create a runway safety zone and relocate the runway away from the Wallkill River in order to protect this regional resource from floods and major storms.

Gillibrand and Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) announced today that City of Newburgh will receive $2,400,000 to hire fifteen new firefighters. Although their grant application was initially denied, the Newburgh Fire Department will now receive this important investment through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program- Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER).
