VIDEO RELEASE: Maloney Celebrates Prides, Urges Passage of Legislation to Support LGBTQ Community

Washington, DC – Today, in honor of Pride Month, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) released the following video statement.

“Pride is a time of celebration and triumph,” said Rep. Maloney. “It is also a time for reflection. Reflection on where we have been and where we need to go. As members of the LGBTQ community, we know that no one is free until we are all free. That means standing up and fighting for the most vulnerable among us – this month and every month.”

This week, in response to the epidemic of violence against transgender and non-confirming individuals, specifically women of color, Rep. Maloney introduced the LGBTQ Essential Data Act. This legislation would fully fund the Center for Disease Control’s National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) and direct the CDC to improve the collection of data on the sexual orientation and gender identity of deceased individuals. Data from the NVDRS is used to prevent further deaths by informing decision-makers, educating communities, and developing and studying violence prevention programs.

This bill is part of Rep. Maloney’s ongoing effort to support the LGBTQ community, during Pride and always. In April, he reintroduced legislation to prevent taxpayer dollars from being spent on conversion “therapy” and crack down on misleading billing tactics.
