Celebrates USPS Decision to Cancel Plans to Eliminate Saturday Delivery

NEWBURGH, NY — At today’s Postal Regulatory Commission meeting, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) testified on behalf of the hundreds of employees at the Mid-Hudson Postal and Distribution Center  in Newburgh and condemned the U.S. Post Service’s decision to accelerate the consolidation of the Mid-Hudson P&DC to Albany. In 2012, it was announced that the Newburgh facility would be scheduled for future consolidation, and Rep. Maloney has been working closely to ensure that the consolidation would have no impact on local jobs.

“I’m outraged at the Postal Service’s decision to consolidate the Newburgh facility an entire year earlier than the original deadline and will continue fighting to ensure that this consolidation does not impact employees or their families,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney.

Rep. Maloney is the first Member of the House of Representatives to testify in person before the Postal Regulatory Commission who is the primary regulator of the U.S. Postal Service and was joined by Debbie Szeredy, the President of Mid-Hudson Area Local, at today’s meeting. Maloney specifically asked the Postal Regulatory Commission to consider a recent complaint to evaluate USPS’ process of consolidating dozens of mail processing plants nationwide.

In addition, Maloney celebrated the United States Postal Service’s decision to cancel plans to end Saturday mail delivery this summer. Maloney supported legislation signed into law that prohibits ending six day delivery.

“I am pleased that Congress passed legislation to ensure USPS does not implement the poor decision to eliminate Saturday delivery for Hudson Valley seniors, veterans and businesses who rely on this essential service. We shouldn't abandon them just because the last Congress couldn’t get its act together,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney.

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney and Rep. Chris Gibson recently sent a joint letter in opposition to Postmaster Donahoe for the inclusion of the Mid-Hudson Postal and Distribution Center on the future closure list. Additionally, Rep. Maloney is currently a co-sponsor of the bi-partisan Postal Service Protection Act, which preserves the USPS without hurting postal workers or damaging the service we provide citizens and businesses across the country.
