Maloney Statement on the Senate Confirmation of Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin

Washington, D.C. – Today, the United States Senate confirmed retired Army General Lloyd Austin to be the new United States Secretary of Defense. Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) released the following statement:

“Secretary of Defense Austin has a celebrated and distinguished career as a General in the United States Army and as the leader of the United States Central Command. He has blazed trails throughout his years of service, and has now, once again, broken down barriers as the first Black defense secretary in our history. I am confident he will lead the Pentagon with the steady hand and dedication our Armed Forces deserve.

“As the Representative for our cadets, servicemembers and staff of the United States Military Academy at West Point, I look forward to working closely with Secretary Austin on the national security issues we face, and will continue to fight for the safety of our country, the security of our people, and the wellbeing of our democracy.”
