Maloney Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Decline Reviewing Same-Sex Marriage Cases

Oct 6, 2014
Press Release

Newburgh, NY - Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to decline reviewing same-sex marriage cases in five states. This decision clears the way for same-sex marriage in Virginia, Utah, Indiana, Wisconsin and Oklahoma and likely expands same-sex marriage to other states covered by the 4th Circuit, 7th Circuit and 10th Circuit including Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

“After raising three beautiful children with my partner of 22 years, Randy and I had the opportunity to be married surrounded by our family and friends. Unfortunately, too many states still prevent millions of Americans from making this same lifetime commitment under the law. Today we celebrate countless couples who will be able to marry the person whom they love, but our work isn't finished - we will continue to fight until all Americans have full equality.”

Sworn in next to his partner of over 20 years, Rep. Maloney is the first openly gay Member of Congress to represent New York. Sean and his husband, Randy, have 3 children together and were married on June 21, 2014 in Cold Spring, New York.
