Maloney Statement on Reports President Trump Ordered Termination of Special Counsel

Press Release

WASHINGTON — Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) released the following statement in response to a New York Times report that President Trump ordered the termination of Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III last June. According to the report, the President directed White House counsel Don McGahn to fire Mr. Mueller, but McGahn refused and threatened resignation if the President proceeded with the termination.

“Since the beginning of this investigation, I’ve said we should follow the facts and let the Special Counsel do his job, so I’ll reserve judgement until we hear from him on what those facts are. Mr. Mueller has already secured indictments of, and guilty pleas from, members of the President’s inner circle, so this investigation has clearly been effective in uncovering illegal behavior. If the President is innocent of wrongdoing, he should stop acting like a guilty person and let Mueller finish his work.”
