Maloney Statement on Rail Crossing Accident in Pawling
Newburgh, NY – Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) released the following statement after a Metro-North Train on the Harlem Line struck a vehicle on the tracks in Pawling.
“We know that accidents at grade crossings like this are preventable, but they still happen all the time. We’ve made some progress, but we’ve got to keep going. That’s why I’ve been working to pass additional legislation to keep these kinds of accidents from happening through the use of emerging technologies. We must take more steps to make our trains safer and protect commuters and drivers. Frankly, we’re just lucky that more people weren’t hurt.”
In 2015, Rep. Maloney worked to pass his bill, The Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Safety Act of 2015, into law. The legislation helps states and communities make safety upgrades at dangerous highway-rail grade crossings. The law provides states and communities with more resources to prevent collisions at grade crossings and invest in protective safety devices to prevent future tragedies. By building bridges and tunnels to separate roadways from rail track, installing improved lights and signals at crossings, and increasing public awareness of grade crossing dangers, states and communities can take significant steps toward making highway-rail grade crossings safer.
