Maloney’s Statement on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Appearance Before the Intelligence Committee

WASHINGTON – Today, Members of the House Intelligence Committee, including Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18), questioned Special Counsel Robert Mueller on his report detailing the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 United States election, whether the Russian government coordinated with the Trump Campaign, and whether the President attempted to obstruct justice during the investigation.

Rep. Maloney questioned Special Counsel Mueller specifically on the President’s refusal to testify in-person, and the decision of the Special Counsel not to use his legal authority to issue a subpoena. A statement from the Congressman is below:

“At the start of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, he said an in-person interview with President Trump was vital - but by the end of his investigation, he said it wasn't.

“In today’s hearing, his answer pointed to balancing the cost of the delay in the courts with the need for information; but what’s clear from the report is that they didn’t subpoena the President because they already had substantial evidence to make a determination on his actions. They already knew what was going on. That’s a major red flag that Mr. Mueller had enough evidence, and the Trump team was in the wrong.

“I thank Mr. Mueller for coming to Capitol Hill today and answering our questions. He was generous with his time and did a great service to our nation,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney.
