Maloney Encourages Hudson Valley Farmers Impacted by 2018, 2019 Natural Disasters to Apply for New Assistance Program
Applications now open

Newburgh, NYRepresentative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18), a Member of the House Agriculture Committee, encourages Hudson Valley farmers impacted by natural disasters – such as hurricanes, flooding and snowstorms – to apply for the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) new Quality Loss Adjustment (QLA) Program, which is administered by the Farm Service Agency (FSA). This program, which is now open, provides assistance to farmers who suffered crop quality losses due to natural disasters in 2018 or 2019.

“I fought hard to secure this funding as a member of the House Agriculture Committee, and it’s vital it gets to local family farms who need it most – especially here in the black dirt region,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. “I encourage every farmer dealing with quality losses because of natural disasters in 2018 or 2019 to take advantage of this new USDA program, which we designed to directly support our local agricultural economy.”

Assistance is available to eligible producers impacted by qualifying natural disasters, and based on a producer’s harvested affected production of an eligible crop. The payment is calculated based on the type of the crop and the damage shown in the documentation of loss. The crop must have had a five percent (or greater) quality loss.

The deadline to apply is Friday, March 5, 2021. Farmers who wish to apply should visit www.farmers.gov/quality-loss to access the online application portal, or contact their local FSA office. Additionally, farmers with questions about this process can contact Rep. Maloney’s office: 845-561-1259.
