Encourages Neighbors to Claim Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Care Tax Credit

Washington, DC – Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) joined Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro, Hudson Valley CASH Coalition and the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide to introduce a free tax preparation program available throughout Orange and Dutchess for middle class families and senior citizens. Rep. Maloney also encouraged his neighbors in the Hudson Valley to claim their Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which is a refundable federal and state income tax credit available to middle class workers and their families. Although 1.6 million New Yorkers qualified for the EITC, one fourth of those eligible nationwide for the tax credit didn’t claim it.

“In these tough economic times, I want to make sure that my neighbors in the Hudson Valley get every single one of their hard earned dollars back from the government. The Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Care Tax Credit help working families who are already stretched too thin, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of this earned benefit that puts real money back in the hands of hardworking Hudson Valley families,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney.

Available to working individuals and families with adjusted gross incomes of less than $50,270, eligible families can receive up to $5,891 on their federal income tax return, and as much as $1,767 from New York State through the Earned Income Tax Credit. The EITC may vary depending on income level and family size, and folks can check their eligibility and potential tax refund by visiting www.eitc.irs.gov. In addition, the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit is worth 20% to 35% of child care costs. Over 90 percent of families use some kind of child care, and families with young children on average spend about $6,700 a year on child care.

The Hudson Valley Cash Coalition is a group of business, community, education, government, religious and social organizations dedicated to helping families and individuals in the Hudson Valley save money and improve their financial stability. Last year, the Coalition prepared nearly 6,000 returns for eligible residents in the two counties and refunds of more than $6.1 million for filers. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide and the CASH Coalition will have 18 sites in Dutchess County and 13 sites in Orange County to provide tax preparation services, and individuals can make an appointment for tax preparation services, or find the site nearest to them and the phone number of that location to make an appointment by calling the free Hudson Valley Region 2-1-1 helpline or by dialing 1-800-899-1479.
