Maloney and Neuhaus Announce $2.9 Million Investment in Orange County Airport

Sep 19, 2014
Press Release

Montgomery, NY - Representative Sean Patrick Maloney and Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus announced today a $2,918,052 FAA investment at Orange County Airport. The funds will be used for the first phase of construction of a new runway at the airport. This grant will allow Orange County to create a runway safety zone and relocate the runway away from the Wallkill River in order to protect this regional resource from floods and major storms.

“This critical investment will create local jobs, grow our economy and shore up one of the busiest non-commercial airports in the state, while protecting the safety of our neighbors, businesses and visitors,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. “Working side-by-side with folks like County Executive Neuhaus, this investment will mitigate the effects of flooding from the Wallkill and strengthen our local infrastructure.”

"This project will increase the safety of pilots, commercial aircraft, and the local community while continuing to make Orange County more economically competitive. A local employer will also perform the work, providing local jobs. I am grateful to our federal partners for helping to secure the grant, and I commend our Airport Director Ed Magryta for his tireless work on behalf of residents as the runway project moves ahead this fall," said County Executive Steve Neuhaus.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) grant for Orange County Airport will be used for the construction and realignment of Runway 3/21 and the associated taxiway, and allow for a standard runway safety area. This is the first phase in the construction project. Last year, Rep. Maloney helped to secure funding for the design phase of this project. The FAA Airport Improvement program is funded by aviation fees, including aviation fuel tax and passenger ticket fees.

There are currently 150 aircraft based at Orange County Airport, as well as three aircraft maintenance service businesses, a flight school, and restaurant. The airport is located at 500 Dunn Road in Montgomery.
