Announces Support for VA Reporting of Infectious Diseases
With soaring temperatures and over a dozen confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ diseases in the Hudson Valley, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) called on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide assistance to health care facilities on best practices for preventing and addressing cases of Legionnaires’ disease in New York and the Hudson Valley region. Some of the most common sources of Legionnaires’ disease are water systems in hotels or hospitals, although most facilities have water treatment equipment to kill Legionella bacteria.

After months of meeting regularly with colleagues on both sides of aisle as a No Labels Congressional Problem Solver, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) partnered with over 70 Democratic and Republican Members of Congress to announce the Make Government Work package of common-sense ideas that would save taxpayers tens of billions of dollars. The Make Government Work legislative reforms are designed to make government more efficient, effective and less wasteful. It is the first legislative initiative by the No Labels Problem Solvers coalition.

Demands Republican Leadership End Sequestration As Hudson Valley Furloughs Begin
As hardworking employees at United States Military Academy at West Point and Stewart Air National Guard begin mandatory furloughs, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney called on Republican leadership to replace sequester with a balanced, bipartisan, long-term budget. At the USMA at West Point instillation, 1,976 civilian personnel will be furloughed, including 675 at the Military Academy, 675 at the US Army Garrison, 263 at the Keller Hospital, and 58 at the Network Enterprise Center. At the USMA, the average salary in lost wages is approximately $4,181.76 per person - an 18% reduction in pay between July 1 and September 30. In addition, US Army Garrison is closing West Point schools on September 13, 16, 20, 23, and 30 and has now closed Washington Gate and Fort Putnam until further notice.

Hosts First Roundtable Discussion with Local Veterans
Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney hosted the first meeting of his Veterans Advisory Board, where a diverse cross section of the Hudson Valley’s current and retired service members discussed issues facing the veteran's community. At the first of many roundtables, Rep. Maloney listened to board members concerns regarding the VA disability claims backlog, the President’s proposed medical treatment fee increases, educational and employment opportunities, and sexual assault in the military. The Veterans Advisory Board includes former and retired service members from the United States Army, Army Reserve, Marine Corps, Navy, Navy Reserve, and New York Army National Guard.

Maloney: We can’t stop disasters like Irene or Sandy but we can make strategic investments to rebuild and make us stronger
As flash flooding hits our region and Hurricane season approaches, Maloney announced federal aid programs available to homeowners and small businesses impacted by Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene or Tropical Storm Lee. Maloney launched a website last week to help homeowners and businesses continue to apply for federal recovery aid. Specifically, Maloney encouraged businesses and farmers to apply for assistance if they were directly damaged or experienced economic hardship as a result of one of these storms. In addition, Maloney highlighted ongoing housing programs available to homeowners who have unmet rehabilitation or repair needs from one of the storms.

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney announced that his office has been selected to take part in the Wounded Warrior Program, which provides employment opportunities to disabled veterans in congressional offices. The veterans’ constituent advocate will help constituents interact with various federal, state and local agencies. Only veterans who served on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001, and have at least a 30 percent service-connected disability rating from the Veterans Administration are eligible.
