Joins Bipartisan Coalition to Pass Legislation that Reverses Worst Impacts of Sequester, Military COLA Cut
Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney supported Fiscal Year 2014 Consolidated Appropriations Act which overwhelmingly passed the House by a vote of 359-67. The bill, expected to pass the Senate later this week, repeals the worst effects of the last Congress’ sequester. This legislation includes provisions to construct a new training center for the Army Reserve in Bullville, NY and invests in construction of new cadet barracks at West Point. The bill also sends nearly 4,000 New York children back to Head Start, boosts safety inspections from the Federal Railroad Administration, provides new resources to address the backlog of veteran disability claims, and repeals the recently enacted cut to cost of living adjustments, or COLAs for pensions of disabled military retirees and survivors.

Loss of Unemployment Insurance Projected to Cost New York Nearly 20,000 Jobs, Over 110,000 New Yorkers Already Affected
Representative Sean Patrick Maloney commended today’s key procedural vote in the U.S. Senate to consider restoring emergency unemployment benefits for three months. Passed by a vote of 60-37, the Senate bill would restore benefits for more than 110,000 New Yorkers who lost their unemployment insurance benefits – including several thousand throughout the Hudson Valley.

Law Will Help Reduce Backlog of Claims for Thousands of New Yorkers
The President signed into law today the VA Expiring Authorities Extension Act, which included a bill authored by Rep. Maloney to help address the Veterans Administration (VA)’s backlog of disability claims. Earlier this year, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney introduced the Disabled Veterans Red Tape Reduction Act, HR 1521, to allow veterans to have their medical examinations done by physicians outside the VA system to help process veterans’ disability claims faster. Currently, 20% of claims are processed through physicians outside the VA system, but the program was set to expire this year. This one-year extension, which also includes housing assistance for homeless veterans, passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 353-0 and the Senate by unanimous consent.

$2.4 Million Federal Investment Supported by Maloney Helped Hire 15 New Firefighters
Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) joined Newburgh Fire Chief Michael Vatter and newly hired firefighters at a live burn training exercise. Earlier this year, Rep. Maloney secured an investment for $2,400,000 to hire fifteen new firefighters through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program - Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER). Although their grant application was initially denied, Rep. Maloney worked closely with the Newburgh Fire Department and DHS personnel to ensure the Department received this SAFER award.
